A concrete love affair

Leicester's Roman Heritage

Much of it is sadly buried under a 1960's major road development known as St Nicolas Circle. This gyratory cut a hole in the city's existing street plan and tore away much of the roman remains. Pictured here are the remains of the Roman Baths that sit beside the Jewry Wall. Adjacent is the pleasingly modernist, yet hopelessly misplaced Vaunghan College creating a barrier on two sides of the remains (and on another side out of frame, St Nicolas Circle) In the distance the West Bridge Wharf flats get a great view of the ravaged cityscape. Although I love concrete buildings, I still appreciate that many, but not all, modernist plans have wreaked havoc on many a fine piece of city heritage... Not least in Leicester! iPhone 3G image.
