The protector

Saw these miners' lamps in the antique store today. I have heard that ironically, the introduction of the original Davy Lamps resulted in an increase in accidents, as parts of mines that couldn't be worked before were opened up. Apparently the lamps were pretty fragile too. I love the name of the left one - The Protector, made in Manchester. We could do with some protection at school, one third of the children in our class were away, struck down with a nasty headachey virus. Maybe the arctic blast some of our papers are predicting will help kill it off.
