Life through the lens...

Rhubarb and orange pie.

I bought this seasons "forced" rhubarb for the first time today, from our local farm shop who grow it in sheds in the fields behind the shop.

The crop is late this year because of the mild weather.
Rhubarb roots need intense cold before being moved to dimly-lit sheds to be "tricked" into growth, which produces the sweet and sour flavours.
The stems are such a lovely pink colour because of growing nearly in the dark, and the "forced" rhubarb tastes quite different from the summer outside grown fruit....or veg!

This is our favourite recipe which my mother used to bake. The sweetness of the orange goes well with the slightly tart flavour of the rhubarb.
Just need a nice jug of cream.

Well now I'm off to eat it!!
