Mystery catkins

Amongst the plants that we inherited in our garden is an undistinguished shrub or small tree. In the autumn it produced bunches of catkins six to eight inches long which were impressive enough in themselves, but now they've all burst into flower and it looks fab.

If anyone can identify the tree we'd love to know.
