Taking Off

Another exceptionally mild day in Washington, so out for a walk about. This time, my meanderings took me to Washington's national airport (one of three which service the nation's capital). I hadn't done this since the kids were little.

The airport is literally on the river: one main runway from which planes land and take off; a park at one end of the runway and a marina at the other. There's a 10ft grassy drop just below where the people are standing on the pic, a flimsy wire fence, and then the start of the runway.

This picture is of a plane taking off, while behind me others are queued up to land -- about every minute or so, depending on the time of the day. As they come in overhead, you almost feel as though you could touch their big fat bellies. The 'wash' in their wake is quite amazing, sounding like the rustling of leaves in trees.
