Culture & cake

parents were up for the day today; while i recovered from the after-effects of last night's partying (mostly lack of sleep, little drinking was done) they went into town to the national museum ot see an exhibition about admiral cochrance 'the real master and commander', which they professed fascinating. we then headed over to the national gallery of modern art for a wander around what turned out to be a beautiful, if busy, exhibition of the works of one of the scottish colourists, fcb cadell. the colourists are coming back into fashion after a period in the wilderness, and while i'm not a huge fan of everything in this, some of the portraits and interiors in particular are incredibly striking (i love his series of women in black hats - the use of black is so bold, it's so rarely seen in great wodges like this that it becomes more stunning than the reds and greens of other works). there are more colourists coming in the next year or so, i shall definitely be making it along to those in my quest for education and enlightenment!

after all that, sandwiches and cake were most definitely on the menu :-)
