Monument

Passing through London I decided to walk between Liverpool Street to London Bridge stations. The walk takes you past the Monument. Surrounded now by modern giants, it once towered over the surrounding city. Built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London and celebrate the rebuilding it has recently been renovated and is once again open to the public. Link here to learn more.

The Monument is 202 feet high. Beyond it you can see the top of the Southwark Shard, across the river, in the final stages of construction. The crane is bolted on to the side at about 950 feet up. When completed the Shard will be the tallest building in the European Union at 1017 feet high. A monument to 21st Century extravagance?
