wander, stumble, wonder

Some friends and I went to see The Muppets tonight. I laughed. A lot. Not sure I've ever laughed that much at the movies. Everyone was laughing. The plot was fairly standard, some of the acting a little random, some songs totally strange, but altogether it was just a wonderfully happy and entertaining film. It felt like a fanboy's ode to the Muppets, with references to all different eras, and a tale of the ultimate fan meeting his idols, but that made it pretty cool. It was self-deprecating, with references to the songs they'd just sung; it was aware of its nature, with comments about it being a movie. It overemphasised a few bits, underemphasised a few others. The audience was drawn in, sighing and awwwing with Kermie, worrying about Walter, and rofling along with the onscreen audience.

All in all, solid entertainment with lots of laughs. It's not The Muppet Movie, but neither is it really trying. It's gets that sense of the Muppets as real people (unlike celebrities), and provides a great load of fun getting from A to B.
