Robinson Mitchell 1821-1888

Another in the Cumbrian Curiosities series.

This is Robinson Mitchell whose statue stands outside Sainsbury's in Cockermouth.
On the plaque it says:To Mr Mitchell may be justly given the credit of establishing the acution system in this district if not, indeed, throughout the Country at large. West Cumberland Times.
The plaque also records that the statue was put up as a result of donations from Mitchells Auctions and Sainsburys. This is because the store stands on the site of the old livestock market. Mitchells furniture and fine art auctions still take place just across the road from Robinson who is able to keep an eye on them. The livestock now have a fine new venue just outside the town...still Mitchells, though!
By the way Robinson Mitchell possessed the standard number of hands for an auctioneer and did not invite bids with his stump. Sometimes one passes him and he actually has two hands, but I am sorry to say that the left one does not stay in place for long before he is back like this. I am showing you the 'everyday' version. Maybe I will blip the left hand someday.
