Kelmscott flags

I took Mum for a drive today and we passed by Kelmscott, a delightful village on the Thames floodplain between Faringdon and Lechlade. William Morris, the writer, socialist and designer lived at the Manor at the end of this road, and is buried in the nearby church. This flagstone wall or fence always attracts my attention whenever I visit. I haven't seen flags being put to this use elsewhere in the area. It appears to be most unusual.
