The Fado Doorway

Two years ago, in Carnaval week, Funchal and most of the Island of Madeira suffered horrific rains, tragic floods and mudslides. There were many deaths and sections of the Old Town were submerged.

The world's press made a big thing of the tragedy but then ignored the courage and the strength of the people who had got things up and running within a couple of days.

A new project, the Open Doors Project, has made it possible for the Old Town to celebrate Madeira's colourful cultural heritage. Art work, including poetry and the restoration of old doors through painting, has made a wander through the narrow streets an exciting adventure.

I could have weeks' worth of blips if I chose. And I will certainly return.

This door is next to two restaurants where the traditional Portuguese fado is featured (a heart-rending form of singing).

Two more days to the Big Carnaval Parade and the excitement is mounting.
