A sheep on a grave obelisk

We visited Crichton Church and Graveyard today and it rewarded us with some fabulous gravestones, a superb view towards Crichton Castle (in ruins) and this interesting feature on the pedastal of the grave obelisk dedicated to the Rutherfoord family dating back to 1799.
At first I wasn't sure what it could be specially as it had a winged soul next to it. Was it a goat and from there my thoughts went to the Devil. But the truth is more mondane. The Rutherfoords were a farming family and the entire pedastal has been adorned with the tools of their trade, as well as symbols of mortality and this sheep, no doubt representational of the large flocks of sheep in their care.
