3 castles head

Cooler and greyer but we decided to be rugged and headed off to 3 Castles Head- at the very end of the mizen - Earthdreamery did a rather beautiful view of it the other day.
This is such a wild and remote other worldy place. You park the car at Dunlough Bay where the largest drugs haul on Irish coast was recovered.  The bay is tiny, rough and full of steep cliffs and the drug escapade was a fiasco at every stage from the weather (gale force winds) to the boat (diesel had been put in the engine instead of petrol) to the gormlessness of the participants (they blokes in the boat and subsequently n the water claimed they had no idea that the 60 fat white bales they had in the boat were cocaine).  Anyway - you reflect on how anyone could ever have thought that was a good idea,  and then go across private land, wend your way up the cliff, through sheep pasture and then suddenly below you, tucked into a valley is a castle! In fact it's a long curtain wall with three towers. It looks out across a long freshwater lake. It's in seriously bad disrepair now, the home of rather handsome black sheep and noisy choughs. A magical place. The stone work is sturdy and beautiful - the walls are incredibly thick.
We climbed another summit to a cairn and ate apples. The view is an amazing one - across to the Sheepshead and beyond to Kerry. It was perishing.  You can see a flickr set here.
