Prince of Wales Museum

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum, although still generally known as Prince of Wales Museum was built to commemorate the visit of the then Prince of Wales (future George V) in 1904.

It took some time to get the project underway and in 1909 George Wittet was appointed architect. Wittet was also the designer of the Gateway of India in Bombay.

The building was completed in 1915 and used as military hospital in the WW1 and was eventually opened in 1922.

The building is in that interesting British imperial style of architecture: Indo-Saracenic and also has elements of Mughal and Maratha style as well.

The building contains a treasure-house of art, archaeology and coins, two of which I tweeted about yesterday - the armour of the Mughal Emperor Akbar and the terracottas from 2,500 BC.
