Frozen in time

It's a funny thing, today was rather spring-like, but yet there are still traces of the big freeze, or 'horror winter' as the papers liked to call it, just a few weeks ago.

This detail made me wonder; why, in amongst the dead fern leaves and other detrius, how a shoe lace also came to be suspended in animation.
