Beneath Biscay

Botellón

Shortly before midnight the post-carnival crowd begins to gather for a bottelón. A sort of mass open-air bring a bottle party, or rather bring a plastic bag full of spirits and mixers.
More and more will arrive, most in fancy dress, until the square is crammed full. Pirates and chickens rubbing shoulders with Martians and Minnie mice.
By 4:30am when we (ahem... returning home from a local bar) passed through the square, all was quiet again as if nothing had occurred. Except for the hundreds of empty carrier bags, bottles and plastic glasses that is. The street cleaners, who would be arriving in a few hours, have their work cut out.
