Eira do Serrado

This photo was taken from the high point of the Eira do Serrado, looking down on the Nuns Valley.

One of the most popular half day trips to Funchal, it gives a clear idea of the harshness of the Paradise for early settlers who didn't have the advantages of the modern tunnels and fast connecting routes.

This dramatic area has wonderful sweet chestnut trees from which they make delicious cakes, puddings, and a liqueur.
