Shadows from 'Face Railings' by Hilary Cartmel


'Face Railings' featuring the portraits of 72 local people by artist HIllary Cartmel. Since spring 1999 hundreds of portraits of local people were created by Stephen Johnson, Sonia Martin, Michelle Rowland and Julie Sassoon. These artists held portrait-sitting workshops at Mulberry School for Girls, Shapla Primary School, The Aldgate Hostel for Single Homeless People, Willis Corroon, Nat West Bank PLC, Spacia, Trowes and Hamlyn, Liverpool Street Station and on neighbouring streets. A selection of these portraits were used by Hillary Carmel on the Face Railings.
Commissioned by One Mile East Public Art Trail Look Ahead's urban regeneration project which runs from Mansell Street into Cable Street. The Face Railings were installed by kind permission of Railtrack PLC and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
