Rags of light

Cue violins

I love graveyards. The more derelict the better. One of my happiest afternoons taking photographs was at the Necropolis in Glasgow at sunset a couple of years ago.

We don't have anything of that scale and grandeur in Brighton but we do have the St Nicholas Rest Garden. It's opposite a beautiful 12th century church and was closed up until quite recently. Now it's been reopened as a dog friendly community garden. It's a wonderful tranquil space and it's lovely to sit and reflect as the dogs chase each other around the tombs and gravestones.

There are some vaults at the side which obviously house the graves of more well to do families. They are in quite poor condition. The adornment in this photo is one of the most complete.

There are various events in the garden such as open air theatre. One year, one of the vaults was opened and there was a recital by a member of the Guild of Funerary Violinists. Did you even know there was such a society? Sadly I missed it but I'm keeping my eye out in case they do a repeat performance.
