Life in Newburgh on Ythan

On top of Cairn Catto.

Back in the mists of time, in the Neolithic sometime between 4000 and 2000 BC, the local loons of Aberdeenshire built a huge long barrow which we now know as Cairn Catto. This was the view from the top of the barrow this afternoon, looking over the surrounding fields.

The barrow takes the form of a great mound of large stones, some of considerable size, with a length of 47.18 m and 18.28 m across and now surrounded by gorse. Various deep holes have been made in the SE end by pulling away the stones, presumably by modern antiquarians or treasure hunters, but no internal structure is now to be seen, although there may have been burial cists incorporated into the cairn when it was built. Two stone axes were found at the cairn in 1885.
