Real Men

A cracking opening performance of 'Real Men Dream in Black and White' at St Mungo's Academy this morning. 100 S3 boys sat silent and transfixed for 40mins, then took part in a discussion on the themes of masculinity and emotional maturity. No mean feat.

Originally created by Eastwood Park Youth Theatre for Exchange 2010, Real Men... is touring schools in Glasgow and Fife over the next three weeks, with accompanying workshops introducing pupils to parkour and physical theatre.

The guys from Eastwood Park have now set up their own professional company, Real Men Theatre.

'I think we have been really fortunate to access this opportunity - the themes underpinning the performance are themes we rarely have the opportunity to explore with boys at a crucial stage in their development. To be able to do so in such an innovative, funny and entertaining way perhaps enabled us to remove the sensitive barriers around some really important emotional issues related to growing up. The Parkour training set the scene and they were hooked - it was an environment where they felt safe enough to articulate some of their concerns and feelings. Can we do the same every year!!? Thanks again to all involved - it was terrific!'
Angela Milton, Headteacher, St Mungo's Academy

More parkour to follow later this year in Jump...
