Church in Toucy, Burgandy

Apparently the original church was burnt down by the English in 1423 (near the end of the 100 years war). 6 years later Joan of Arc passed through on her way to Orléans to finally deliver France from the rapacious Anglo-Burgundians, or so the story goes.

The church doesn't look like one from this angle as it was fortified and had a 'donjon' (translate as 'keep' and not 'dungeon' which suggests an underground prison (cachot).

There is a thriving market, but many of the villages nearby are becoming depopulated.
