Koonung Park Wetlands

Expanding on my entry from yesterday, here is a pic of the newly created native wetland habitat in our park. About three years ago this was nothing but a dry, muddy puddle. No fish or water birds and very few plants, and those that were there we're very scraggly and unhealthy. Now, however, after a long project of replanting and fencing off of new growth, coupled with the end of the drought a couple of years ago, we have this beautiful little piece of native habitat in the middle of suburbia, full of native plants and birds.
This is very common now in Melbourne. We have many parks and natural areas that still resemble very much what this area may have looked like before White settlement. It's a big part of why I love living here, and there's a real feeling that it's getting even better around here, with even more efforts to preserve native habitats and wildlife populations.
