River Drava at Osijek

It's all starting to get a bit blurred now, although that's not true of the view from my hotel bedroom window first thing this morning.

But the succession of cities, views, histories and politics of the region tasted during this trip has been quite bewildering. Yesterday we met a medieval historian based here and discussed some aspects of how the past affects the present. This morning we will go to the University in Osijek, meet colleagues, local journalists and then have lunch (another meal....I'm really going to be on the bread and water when I get back), before heading off to the town of Vukovar, scene of a notorious siege in 1991 until it was eventually overrun by Serb forces with massive loss of life. Finally we will cross the border into Serbia and travel a little down the Danube to Novi Sad, the administrative capital of the Vojvodina area which has substantial regional autonomy with in Serbia and a large ethnic Hungarian minority.
