It's been a century since Edgar Rice Burroughs published his first John Carter story A Princess of Mars. The Red Planet of his stories is dying and desertified and home to ancient civilisations warring with one another; tales that went on to influence a generation of science fiction writers like Ray Bradbury and Robert Heinlein, as well as the planetary scientist and SETI advocate Carl Sagan.

Mars is bright after sunset over Leith, just past opposition and the closest its been to Earth for two years - joining Jupiter, Venus and Saturn in an all-night cavalcade of planets.
