Nature day after day

The early bird catches the worm!

I put out the last of the mealworms this morning (the next batch is due to arrive tomorrow) so was out earlier getting some bird photos. Starlings gobbling up most of the worms as usual but this female Brownbird (I call them Brownbirds as I don't think the name Blackbird quite suits the female) and a male would come over to get a few, too. When the Starlings were crowding round the bowl and she couldn't get a look in she found this little worm beside the log and snapped it up.

I'm quite excited as a pair of Robins have been investigating the strangest of places - my Mums ornamental white dovecote - which stands on a pole near the greenhouse. There are eight small entrances going right around it but they've been going in and out and showing quite a lot of interest (have seen them both yesterday morning and this morning). Not sure if they're serious about nesting in it or not as there's quite a lot of entrances or whether they were just finding insects in there to eat. Will keep watching them though to see what they do.
