A place in time

Reflections

Another wander into town to pick up lunch of a half price salad (see blip from yesterday) while the offer still holds.

I often admire the mirror image reflection shown here, but it is not always as clear depending on river traffic/wind/tidal flow (assuming you can have tides affecting the river this far inland?).

The building with the arches formerly housed the offices of a firm of chartered accountants, if I remember rightly, but is now home to the ACM (Academy of Contemporary Music). The ACM also has the top floor of the nearby Rodborough Buildings - see my blip of 1st February.

Next door is the 1913 Electricity Works, which according to www.geograph.org.uk:

This is the rear view of the Electric Theatre which now occupies the premises of the 1913 works. The building was converted and extended in order to house a cafe bar, offices for staff of the theatre, and a 180/210 seater auditorium, which now accommodates a wide range of both amateur and professional theatrical and music events, comedy evenings, Guildford Music festival and Guildford Book festival events (to name but a few).
The 1913 Electricity works was the second in the town (the former one having been next door), and was in use for less than 15 years. In May 1928 the works were transferred to another building in Woodbridge Road, but the old works continued in use as a distribution centre and all the town centre mains radiated from this point. The building remained dormant from the late 1960s, being used as a scenery and costume store for local amateur dramatics societies, until it was eventually converted into a theatre, and opened as such in 1997.
A number of the operational features, and original workings such as pulleys, pulley wheels, porcelain splashback tiles have been retained in the design of the interior of the building.

Actually, in 1986/87 I worked in one of the new buildings built on the one-way system that looked out across the town towards the Electricity Works and I watched as a new (and very large) office block was built between our office and the 1913 Works and have snaps as the brickwork rose up to block out the view. I wonder if I can find it to add as a back-blip when I become a full member?

By the way, spotted in the window of a photo shop in town today was the display of mobile phone covers that you could get made up featuring your favourite snapshot. What a terrific idea, eh? Might seriously consider getting one of those...
