Annie and Chris

Scene & Heard

Tonight we've both attended an evening of short plays. These were plays written by children in North London. The plays were all brilliant - funny, imaginative, quirky. Who could argue with a cast list including "Gavin, a Colin the Caterpillar cake from Marks and Spencer". Amazing.

The children are given an amazing opportunity to express themselves through the charity Scene & Heard which gives tuition and support in script writing. Ultimately they arrange for the plays to be put on show to the public using all professional theatrical casts and support. It's a charity Annie became aware of having taken part in Give Camp: it was one of the charities that received some IT development over a weekend from a collection of IT professionals for free.

The scripts for the plays were presented exactly as written and unedited. The children gain confidence in their writing but more than that, they gain personal confidence and it gives their work so much more by seeing it played out in the way this charity is able to present. The children are present and take a bow with the cast at the end of their play. Many of these children come from extremely challenging home environments and this is a great way to give them a unique and personal experience and improved self-esteem.
