Eulogy to the horizon

The sculpture 'Eulogy to the horizon' (Elogio del horizonte) by the artist Eduardo Chilida. Originally viewed with some scepticism by the residents of Gijon, it is now fully accepted and embraced as an emblem of the city.

It is located on the Santa Catalina headland, above the old gun battery, which is now a public park. The battery itself was built in the middle of the first decade of the twentieth century, its construction having been triggered by the Spanish-America war of 1898. However the extensive fortifications were never equipped with artillery. This left Gijon more or less defenceless in the face of naval bombardment by nationalist forces during the civil war, notably by the cruiser Almirante Cervera.

The park is a great place for a walk, with splendid views in every direction.
