It is worth visiting Washington, DC for the Metro alone, with its cavernous stations, its cool comfortable cars, the lights on the platform edge that pulse discreetly when a train is due. But one of the highlights is exiting at Dupont Circle on the looong escalator that carries you directly into to the sunshine.
