Primroses & Cowslips

These are among the many primroses and cowslips growing in my rose bed. They are so beautiful that I cannot pull them out, especially as they are in flower long before my roses. Cowslips I believe, used to be "protected" and it was illegal to destroy them. Is that still the case?
