NOT a crocus!

Romulea bulbocodium, aka Sand Crocus. But crocus it is not. Note the true, green stem, just under the flower. Crocus flowers extend down below soil level, the true stem only appearing above ground when the seed is ripe which is as the leaves yellow. Also, the leaves, could you see them, do not have a white stripe like crocus leaves! This plant loves a sunny spot and enjoys our sandy soil, seeding around gently. Here endeth the lesson for Palm Sunday!
