At 1pm the clouds warned me I probably didn't have a whole lunch hour but I took no notice and walked to the canal. There was lots to see: exuberant knots in different coloured rope; a huge wooden rudder, stained by the water line but unrotted; plants, bicycles and firewood heaped up on the tops of boats, grab-rails and wind turbines and lots of metalwork I couldn't identify.
I chatted with a woman who's been living on her narrow boat for six years about fetching water and being tidy and how easy it is to keep such a small space heated to 25°.
Then the fat dusty raindrops started. Our first for almost a month.
