THUNDERER

Welcome to 'The Thunderer'.

The West Coast Railway Company Class 47 Diesel Locomotive 47580 'County of Essex', in BR Large Logo livery, at the head of a double-header train on the 'The Settle-Carlisle Thunderer' trip today. Bringing up the rear was engine 47826, owned by the West Coast Railway Company.

This specially chartered train, consisting of standard, first and dining coaches departed from Scarborough around 0700 today and will proceed to Settle, over the famous Ribblehead Viaduct to Carlisle.

After a break in Carlisle the train will head east along the scenic Tyne Valley Line, with views of Hadrian's Wall and the River Tyne. Approaching Newcastle it will turn south on to the East Coast Main Line and head for home tonight.

British Rail Class 47 Diesel Locomotives were built by Brush Traction at Crewe and Loughborough between 1962 and 1968. Designed for passenger as well as freight services this class of diesels were a true 'workhorse' of the BR network.
County of Essex also held the numbers D1762, 47167, and 47732.
