Memorial

In days gone by, family on my Fathers side were Merchant Seamen and whalers sailing out of Leith and Granton in Edinburgh.

I have no connection with the sea now but do find this memorial very evocative - it makes me think of those past members of my family lost to the sea or who experienced a hard life upon the waves during war and times of peace....

This image shows just a small part of what is a very interesting memorial....

"On Tuesday 16th. November 2010 Princess Anne unveiled the Scottish Merchant Navy War Memorial in Leith. Prior to the unveiling a moving commemoration service held in South Leith Parish Church which was attended by numerous dignitaries and invited guests.

This was followed by a procession from the church to the memorial. The memorial is dedicated not only to the Merchant Seamen who died in the Great War and the Second World War but also to those who lost their lives at sea in peacetime"
