Egypt Mews

South Morningside.... a farm called Egypt has been recorded here since 1585! The name most likely derived from the medieval supposition that Romany folk came from Egypt. In any event we know that gypsies were expelled from Edinburgh in 1540. This land was just outside the city jurisdiction, so it is reasonable to think that they took refuge here, and gave the place its name.

But the presence of the name Egypt, spawned a number of biblical and idyllic titles for neighbouring streets. Nile Grove, Eden Lane, Canaan Lane, Jordan Lane.
