Heriot Watt University, Riccarton

What a Saturday - starting off with an unsuccessful trip to Blackwell's Bookshop at Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton, to pick up my books for World Book night, which just so happened to be closed until Monday (I was meant to pick them up at Blackwell's bookshop on the Bridges, but there was a botch up!). Following that, had a visit to the exceedingly drab Hermiston Gate followed by the excitement of Tesco, Corstorphine. Now watching Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis in 'The Vikings'.

Here is a bit of history about Heriot-Watt University:

Heriot-Watt University is a teaching and research university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The eighth oldest higher education institution in the United Kingdom, it began in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, the world's first mechanics' institute. In recognition of James Watt, the name changed to the Watt Institution and School of Arts in 1837, and to Heriot-Watt College in 1885 after George Heriot. It became a university in 1966.

Of the 4 main campuses, the main one is located in Riccarton, Edinburgh on a 380 acre site once occupied by the estate of Riccarton House, several features of which remain on site. In addition to student residences, teaching and research facilities, the campus has a purpose-built postgraduate centre, several shops and sports facilities. The campus is home to Europe's oldest research park, which allows collaboration between the university and several private businesses.
