Roots

Mr PP has been working like a Trojan this past week, digging and digging and digging; cutting through a network of thick tree-roots in ground that hasn't seen a spade in decades. The soil was so impacted that in the course of all this labour he's met only three worms on three different days.

Not content with digging, he's griddled the soil and the result on the tarpaulin is glorious quality top soil. (Today's hail-showers have cut patterns into it, as you see.) It's irrestistibly tactile.

The idea is that when the soil returns to these trenches it will become a vegetable patch. Can't wait to be eating home-grown veggies. But there's still a long way to go yet.

We'll start importing worms and leaf-mould once the soil goes back. What fun!
