Fremantle Prison

It was raining today (first time in 6 months according to the locals) so what better thing to do than take in a tour of Fremantle Prison, the largest convict built structure in Western Australia, and now a World Heritage Site.
The first of almost 10,000 convicts arrived in 1850 as a labour force to help construct infrastructure for the Swan River Colony. One of the initial projects was to build their own home - the Convict Establishment - later renamed Fremantle Prison. It was closed as a maximum security prison in 1991 and if the walls could talk they would tell stories of loneliness, pain and suffering. As a place of execution between 1888 and 1984, 43 men and 1 woman were hanged here.
A very interesting but sobering place.
