Honey Bees Hard At Work

We took a jeep ride into the woods today with the grandkids and ran across this bee hive setup. Never seen one set quite like this - don't know what the liquid is on top, unless it's food for them to make honey, but there were lots of honey bees flying everywhere, but none stung me.
