A little History lesson!

Fortification and Occupation

Following the invasion of the Channel Islands in 1940 and Hitler's directive of 1941, that the Channel Islands should be turned in to a naval fortress,(Festung). It was soon apparent that the navy alone would be unable to fulfil all its commitments, so as a temporary measure, the army was brought in to help bring the coastal artillery up to strength. However, the replacement navy weapons never arrived and the army batteries remained in operation up until liberation in 1945. The German forces quickly consolidated their positions. They brought in infantry, established communications and anti-aircraft defences, established an air service with mainland France and rounded up British servicemen on leave. The island was prominately set up with Strongpoints and Resistance Nests as well as a telephone network command bunkers an all artillery and anti art raft batteries batteries.
The islanders who chose not to or were unable to evacuate before the invasion of the 28th June 1940 had to endure a diffucult 5 year occupation, with lack of food supply's and coping with new rules and regulations, please see here for more details on the German Occupation of the Channel Islands.
