jupiter

King of the gods and of the planets, Jupiter is a reduction of 'Deus Pater', meaning 'God father'. The mass of Jupiter is more than 2.5 times that of all the other planets put together.

Jupiter has at least 63 moons, the largest of which were discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. They are known as the Galilean moons; Callisto, Ganymede, Europa and Io.

Callisto and Ganymede are larger than the planet mercury.

Europa has an water ice covered surface with a potential liquid ocean underneath, so is an intriguing candidate for the search for extra terrestrial life.

next up.... Saturn
