Day 2

Happy birthday to my father today!

Today was another very full day of varied farm tasks. The largest and most satisfying of these being the transplanting of 1000 heads of lettuce and around 200 broccoli plants into the ground. It took 5 of us about 3 hours to accomplish this. The picture shows the broccoli starts in the foreground.

Lettuce and broccoli both favor a cooler climate than May typically affords in this area of Humboldt County, but heavy rains in March and April have thrown off the schedule quite a bit, and the farm is coping as best it can. One thing can be said for small-scale, hands-on organic farming: the food reflects the season. Everything is at the mercy of natural elements, though coaxed through with much wisdom and care, and is thus a labor of love and very much a product of the earth. I know being in this place will be wonderfully nurturing for me.

Internet is very slow so comments are difficult--I am however still enjoying everyone's pictures! The days are long and they begin early...I must to bed! Yesterday is backblipped.
