A Celebratory Pin

I bought this today in a charity shop. It is a pin for the Coronation of George V.
It has inscribed on the back - "Burgh of Leith - Coronation of George V - 22nd June 1911 - M. Smith, Provost "
I have never seen anything like it before. I wonder if these were common once upon a time.
