End of the Penny Ferry Pub

Yet another Public House is due for demolition to make way for housing.. It is on the banks of the River Cam, where one could have a nice meal and drink on the terrace in summer and in the cooler weather inside in the comfortable lounge. It dates from the 1850's and was formerly known as the 'Pike and Eel.' The council's refusal for planning permission was overturned. They (the council) rightly said it would harm both the street scene and the river. Carolin Gohler of 'Cambridge Past and Present' said it was worth preserving and that it was a huge disappointment that a valuable and beautiful location is lost for local people and others to enjoy. It brought delight to walkers and boaters along the recreational route to the Fens and through the meadows.
