Graffiti Power #2

After breakfast in South Fremantle we headed down to the old power station that was the subject of an earlier blip .

The vastness of its empty shell was just as attractive as was the street art/ graffiti that covered almost every bit of every wall, even the highest. One can only imagine how the artists got there, and even more so how they didn't fall.

It is totally abandoned and we entered at our own risk and a potential $5000 fine. We were not the first to have entered and certainly will not be the last, but we kept our visit to a minimum, just in case.

Construction of the Power Station commenced in January, 1946. The South Fremantle site was chosen for its relatively close metropolitan population, its proximity to nearby railway facilities for the delivery of coal and the ease with which seawater could be utilized for the cooling system.

A major fire in 1954 in the coal conveyor from the crusher house caused structural damage. Eventually in September 1985, the South Fremantle Power Station closed after 34 years service.

Its future is unknown, as are a lot of these old buildings.

But one thing I am convinced of is that some of these landmark buildings are worthy of a few taxpayers dollars to convert, keep in contact and give back to the community in some shape or form.
