Flakturm III.

Hidden away in the Humboldthain Volkspark are the remains of a massive concrete tower built after the first raids on Berlin by the Royal Air Force in 1940. They held the large anti-aircraft guns necessary to defend the city from attack by those heavy bomber formations managing to penetrate the line of defense formed by the fighters of the Luftwaffe.

One of three such constructions around Berlin built on the orders of Adolf Hitler, these towers not only held anti-aircraft ordnance but were also designed as air-raid bunkers - protecting up to 10 000 civilians behind the 3.5 metre-thick walls which took only six months to build.
