Cairnpapple Burial Cairn

The highest point in West Lothian is Cairnpapple Hill at 1,012 ft. It is possible in clear weather to see across the breadth of Scotland. In the east can be seen Berwick Law and the Bass Rock, and to the west, the mountains of the island of Arran. Northwards are Ben Lawers and the Trossachs while to the south lie the Pentland Hills.
Here on the top of the Cairnpapple is an important religious site with a burial cairn containing stone kists. Scottish Heritage have excavated it and you can clamber down inside to see the chamber. A dramatic and weird place inside.
4000 years ago the Beaker Men left their pottery vessels for their relatives to have a drink on awakening in the afterlife. Although there are no standing stones there are large holes spaced evenly around the cairn where they probably were.
There are many other standing stones around this area.
