El Retiro

El Retiro is the most famous of Madrid's parks. We wandered in after our visit to the Egyptian Embassy and found ourselves at the boating pond just as the sun came out. As always, it took me back to my first visit 32 years ago when I fell into conversation with an elderly English gentleman who had defied doctors orders to fly to Madrid one last time. I don't think I will ever see the park but through his appreciative eyes, and know that one day (hopefully, still a long way off!) I too will sit on one of the benches watching the boats and smile under the summer sun, one last time.
