It was a bank holiday today (VE Day) so we joined the procession to the war memorial, where one of our neighbours read an extract from Primo Levi's If This is a Man -- for me, one of the great books of the 20th century. The theme of our mayor Serge's speech: "Don't forget where the extreme right has taken us before." He must have been shaken by the 20% of votes for Marine Le Pen in the first round, in a village that has always been firmly anchored on the left.

Then aperitifs and home, where instead of working I made an excellent ginger cake. Mine looked better than the photo in the Guardian article (it didn't sink). I took some photos but thought this vine was more blippable.
